CUHL Remembers Sue Varon-Spector

The Chicago United Hockey League mourns the passing of one of the true pioneers of women’s hockey in Illinois, Sue Varon-Spector.

Sue broke on to the Illinois hockey scene as the Hockey Director at the Skokie Skatium. There she oversaw the learn to skate classes in addition to the House League program and one of the largest adult leagues in the area. She was instrumental in organizing the Senior Elite Checking League that had numerous national champions.

Sue was the founder and coach of the first all-girls teams in the Chicago area: The Shooting Stars. This team would move seven girls on to college hockey and one to the first women’s Olympic team. She was also involved with the American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association. She served on the AHAI Board of Directors and was a regular fixture at the Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame awards Dinners.

Sue made hockey in Illinois a better place for all. She will be missed.
